ABOUT THE SPECIES

The Grey Nurse Shark’s preferred habitat includes sandy-bottomed gutters or rocky caves, close to inshore rocky reefs or islands. Grey Nurse populations along the coast of New South Wales and southern Queensland are listed as ‘critically endangered’.  Sharks have a bad reputation, and this often stands in the way of us understanding their real importance. As apex predators, sharks are essential for healthy oceans.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

Sea Shepherd actively campaigns for the protection of sharks. The Grey Nurse is threatened by many human activities including fishing bycatch, habitat destruction, climate change and government-endorsed culling programs.  In Australia, Sea Shepherd’s campaign Operation Apex Harmony sheds light on the destructive nature of state-sanctioned shark control programs through investigation, documentation and publication. By bringing the message to the Australian public, Sea Shepherd is mobilising support for the long-term protection of sharks under Australia’s environment laws.  “At the end of the day, sharks can live on this planet without us, but we cannot live on this planet without them” – Sea Shepherd Australia’s Managing Director Jeff Hansen.
