ABOUT THE SPECIES
The pocket rocket Purple-crowned Fairywren is a social and energetic bird found in dense creekside vegetation in northern Australia. The species has a bright blue perky tail, pale buff belly and males sport a stunning crown of purple through the breeding season. They spend their days flitting around between Pandanus, river grasses and shrubs, and foraging in leaf litter to find their food. Their habitat is threatened by trampling and overgrazing by feral herbivores, compounded by poor fire regimes. Image courtesy of AWC.
ABOUT THE ORGANISATION
AWC protects one of the most significant populations of this species at Mornington Wildlife Sanctuary in the Kimberley. AWC’s conservation management is designed to protect and improve the fairywren’s habitat by excluding feral cattle and protecting pandanus-lined creeklines from destructive wildfires in the late dry season. AWC carried out intensive monitoring of the fairywrens at Mornington to learn as much as we can about them! After countless early mornings we have learnt lots about these populations. They’re loyal partners, they stay with their family to help raise the next generation, they are defensive of their homes and are extremely cute.
