ABOUT THE SPECIES
The green sea turtle can still be found all around the world, mainly in tropical and sub-tropical waters. Once found in huge ‘herds’ of many thousands grazing on seagrass their numbers have been declining as pressures on them grow. They have been (and still are) taken for their meat, get caught in nets and drown, their nesting habitat is changing and the seagrass beds they graze on are shrinking. And now climate change and sea-level rise are having an impact. With eggs being laid on sandy beaches, juveniles living in the open ocean and larger ones grazing on seagrass, they live their life across many habitats.
ABOUT THE ORGANISATION
The Sea Turtle Foundation seeks to highlight the dangers faced by all sea turtle species and actively works to reduce these threats. The STF has engaged with community groups, researchers and industry to monitor populations, respond to stranded and sick turtles and worked with traditional owners, government and industry on projects that can further reduce threats. The STF has also played a major role in hosting and coordinating workshops and symposia, ensuring research organisations, government and local community groups can come together and share knowledge and experience about a wide range of sea turtle conservation issues.
