ABOUT THE SPECIES
A nocturnal carnivorous marsupial the size of a guinea-pig, the crest-tailed mulgara used to be distributed across a wide area of central and inland arid Australia. However, its distribution was significantly reduced due to a combination of predation by introduced predators and competition with rabbits.
ABOUT THE ORGANISATION
Wild Deserts are about to conduct the first translocation of the crest-tailed mulgara from remnant populations in South Australia to the Wild Deserts site in NSW. This will increase the range of the species and enable it to establish in fenced exclosures without the threats of predators and rabbits. This work will provide an important opportunity to learn more about the ecology and behaviour of the species which is currently limited.
